Baden-Württemberg has an outstanding reputation, both in Germany and internationally, as an automobile-manufacturing location. Learn more about the background and structure of this success and the potential, locations, companies, facilities, networks and opportunities for cooperation.
Both manufacturers and suppliers profit in Baden-Württemberg from one of the world's highest industry concentrations. Operations from the most varied of areas work closely with the manufacturers as suppliers, purchasers, cooperation and development partners.
Baden-Württemberg's capable automotive supplier industry enjoys an excellent reputation. Entrepreneurs and pioneers, such as Behr or Bosch, Eberspächer, Knecht or Mahle, are examples of Swabian inventiveness and innovation. Baden-Württemberg's supplier industry distinguishes itself by its high flexibility and thus emulates the globalization tendencies of the automobile manufacturers. Most of all, the automobile industry profits from the knowledge and innovation of the aerospace industry.
Every twentieth employee in Baden-Württemberg's industry is an engineer - a ratio that is unbeaten in Europe. There is a reason: In Baden-Württemberg, almost one in every two students study business or engineering. Many universities in the state offer special programs in the mobility area, such as design and process technology, vehicle technology, vehicle engineering and mobility industry design.

Science Park I + II Ulm
Science Park I in the science city of Ulm offers young companies a base for starting in a professional environment. Science Park II is a rapidly growing network comprising the university, university of applied sciences, and numerous research, development and production facilities of innovative branches of industry, above all the DaimlerChrysler Research Center. The companies in the science park - including Siemens and Takata - already have around 45,000 square meters of usable space available, and an expansion is being planned.

STEP Stuttgarter Engineering Park
The Stuttgart Engineering Park with its integrated management and services concept offers an optimal infrastructure for developing ideas for marketable products. It is not just the direct autobahn connection and its own local train station that make it a prime location, but especially its proximity to universities and research institutes. Around 80,000 m² of office space are already available, and an additional 60,000 m² can be built in consultation with the future tenants. The resident companies profit from short connections, efficient communication networks and an attractive work environment.

An example: In 2001, the "Baden Württemberg Fuel Cell Research Alliance," the "Fuel Cell Competence and Innovation Center of the Stuttgart Region" and the "Fuel Cell Continuing Education Center of Ulm" joined together in the Baden-Württemberg Fuel Cell Initiative. The members from the electronics (e.g. Bosch, Ballard), aerospace (e.g. German Aerospace Center - DLR), energy (e.g. EnBW) and automobile (e.g. DaimlerChrysler) sectors as well as highly specialized research facilities work together on developing the mobile, stationary and portable use of the fuel cell.
