Baden-Württemberg is one of the leading locations for production technology with the core sector machine building and plant construction. Companies from the area of drive power engineering are important partners of the automobile and mechanical engineering industry. Recently, for example, the interest of mechanical engineers in small motors has grown considerably. International industry leaders, such as ZF Friedrichshafen AG, SEW Eurodrive GmbH & Co. KG, Voith Turbo GmbH & Co. KG or Valeo can be found in Baden-Württemberg. They all profit from the numerous faculties in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and mechatronics, from specialized research institutes and from the large sales potential in the automobile and mechanical engineering industries.

German manufacturers earn one-fourth of the worldwide sales revenue from machine tools. Half of the German total is earned by companies from Baden-Württemberg. And so our state earns more revenue from machine tools than the whole U.S.A. Machine tools serve as an impulse-giver and important partner for the rest of the mechanical engineering sector as well as for the automobile, electrical and aeronautics industry. The proximity to the most important customer industries as well as the specialized university and research base make the state an optimal location for machine tool manufacturers. Such as for the Chiron-Werke, the INDEX-Werke or Dieffenbacher as well as for Trumpf, Schuler and Müller Weingarten, Europe's three revenue leaders.

In Baden-Württemberg, you profit from one of the world's highest concentrations of the industry. The state unites numerous companies from the areas of machine building and plant construction, electronics/ electrical engineering, automation, optics/precision mechanics, information technology and metal production and processing. The remaining areas of industrial process technology include companies that serve each other as suppliers, customers, cooperation and development partners. The quality of the products “Made In Baden-Württemberg” is confirmed by the export share: Every fifth exported machine worldwide comes from Germany, most of them from Baden-Württemberg.

The production technology companies in Baden-Württemberg have a large supply of qualified workers available. Resident industrial process technology companies employ more than 50% of all employees in the production sector work in this area. The concentration of engineers, scientists and technicians is among the hightest in all of Europe: Every 12th employee has had a technical education. Baden-Württemberg offers education targeted for industrial production technology, such as at FH Karlsruhe, University of Stuttgart and FH Offenburg. Almost every third student is enrolled in business or engineering at a university or university of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg, added to by the ones enrolled in mathematics, information science or physics. Of the new training contracts, more than 55 % are in the areas of industry and commerce, a large share of them as industrial or tool mechanics.
