Intralogistics

Intralogistics has developed into an important business sector in the last few years. You can find out what this industry offers in Baden-Württtemberg here.

Top position in technology
The term "intralogistics" describes the industry that provides the machinery for internal materials flow and logistics. These include the suppliers of hoist lifts, materials handling and storage equipment, logistics software, identification technologies, services, complete systems, etc. In Baden-Württemberg, 800 intralogistics companies offer the entire spectrum in, ultimately, complementary services. They include basic elements of materials-handling technology, conveyor, storage and picking technology, packaging technology, loading aids, automation technology, information and communications technology, intralogistics services. New machine elements and control technology are revolutionizing the entire field of internal materials flow. Baden-Württemberg is in a top position here. Companies such as DaimlerChrysler and viastore are successfully using the newest intralogistics technologies.
Industry concentration
Many of the companies of the intralogistics sector are located in the traditional industrial locations in the Middle Neckar (with Stuttgart and Heilbronn) and Rhine-Neckar (with Karlsruhe and Mannheim) regions, but the regions around Künzelsau, Backnang, Oberndorf am Neckar, Villingen-Schwenningen, Freiburg and Lörrach also host intralogistics companies. Compared to its size, Baden-Württemberg is the state with the highest concentration of intralogistics companies in Germany.
Labor force potential
The employees working in the intralogistics sector in Baden-Württemberg account for more than 100,000 and are largely well trained and higher-qualified employees. Karlsruhe is home to the oldest materials-handling institute in Germany. Outstanding educational opportunites in the industry are offered by the University of Stuttgart with the IFT (Institut für Fördertechnik und Logistik), under the direction of Prof. Wehking, the universities of Karlsruhe and Hohenheim, universities in Reutlingen and Esslingen and the universities of cooperative education and Fraunhofer institutes. The Baden-Württemberg training concept ranges from mechanical engineering design to software and systems technology, simulation and virtual factory planning, investment and procurement management, business informatics and production management as well as ergonomics.
Network structures
WGTL Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Technische Logistik
The physical material flow stands at the start of all logistics and is thus one of the most important foundations of industrial action. "The right goods at the right time at the right place" has not only become the first principle of logistics doctrine but also the credo of an entire sector, which uses modern information and material-flow technology for its fulfillment.

The Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft Technische Logistik has set for itself the goal of scientifically accompanying this important field of industrial action and, with cooperative research and development, providing decisive impulses for technical innovation in logistics.

Both highly specialized knowledge and interdisciplinary action are needed to meet the specific demands of the technical side of logistics. For that reason, experts from various technical areas have come together to make a multitude of special contributions to the still young scientific discipline of technical logistics.

Technology transfer
In Baden-Württemberg, science and business practice are entering into a fruitful cooperation in materials-handling technology and material flow. For example, the Institut für Fördertechnik und Logistik IFT of the University of Stuttgart has developed a new lifting device and shelf module for transportation vehicles of the KEP industry. The software tool BELOP, an evaluation tool for logistics processes, was developed at the same institute. BELOP makes a process-oriented, cause-appropriate assignment of logistics costs possible within the framework of calculations and scenario comparisons.
