Baden-Württemberg offers the best location-specific conditions for energy service-providers and energy technology manufacturers – both in the conventional domain and in regenerative energy use: a broad research and university base, numerous technology transfer centers (Steinbeis) and regional industry networks. Inform yourself about Baden-Württemberg as a location for the energy industry.
Beyond that, Baden-Württemberg is a leading location for companies from the hydroelectric power, wind power, and other renewable energy industries. Important companies of the hydroelectric power industry, such as VA Tech Hydro, Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, Alstom Power Generation or Wasserkraft Volk AG operate from locations in Baden-Württemberg. ABB, one of the largest manufacturers of electrical systems and generators for wind power systems, is located in the state. One fourth of all wind turbines installed worldwide have been equipped with electrical systems from ABB. ABB is meanwhile active worldwide in the planning and implementation of large scale wind power projects. Baden-Württemberg is an important location for the solar industry as well. Manufacturers of solar cells and photovoltaic modules, such as RWE Schott Solar GmbH, Solar Fabrik AG or Sunways AG, as well as full-range suppliers of photovoltaic systems are located in the state as are numerous producers of components for thermal solar use.
Of course, a large share of the generated energy is consumed in the state. Here, major industry is the main consumer, followed by private households and commercial and production companies. In power generation, nuclear energy is in first place, followed by coal. Power generation from wind and sun still makes up a bit less than 1%. Large sums have been invested in recent years in wind power, photovoltaic, biomass utilization, energy production from waste. Overall, the share of power generation from renewable energy sources (including running-water, reservoir and pump storage power plants) is around 7%.
One of the strongest growth industries worldwide is photovoltaics. Annual growth rates of the world market are currently over 30%. Germany is currently the largest market worldwide for photovoltaics. In thermal solar energy, Germany is the largest market within Europe with the greatest market dynamism. Sales of solar heating systems have grown ten times in the last ten years. Wind power is also booming: Overall, the industry has grown ten-fold in Europe since 1995. The number of people employed in the area of wind energy in Germany has risen from about 5,000 in 1994 to over 45,000 in 2002. Germany is the largest European producer of wind energy with over 50% of the installed capacity. With hydroelectric power's share in power generation of about 10-12 percent, Baden-Württemberg holds the top position in Germany.
