Top position in technology
Baden-Württemberg is one of the most important locations for environmental technology. In addition to hundreds of small, extremely innovative companies, numerous German and international corporations active and successful in environmental technology, such as Siemens, ABB or GEA Wiegand, are located here. Baden-Württemberg is also an important location for companies in the environmental biotechnology industry. For example, IBL Umwelt und Biotechnik GmbH (specialist and leading supplier for prevention and elimination of environmental damage) and Wehrle Werk AG (environmental systems construction) are headquartered in the state.

Numerous products and procedures that are used successfully today worldwide to protect the environment have resulted from the close cooperation between research institutes and companies in Baden-Württemberg.

  • The Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoffforschung (ZSW) (Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research) in Stuttgart has developed a thin-film solar technology that markedly reduces the materials costs in production and ensures a greater production throughput.
  • Reinluft Umwelttechnik from Stuttgart has developed a high-performance bio-filter that effectively cleans exhaust streams with high pollution burdens.
  • The University of Stuttgart and the IGB have developed a microbiological process to eliminate chlorinated hydrocarbons from the groundwater.
  • The Bruchsal-based company Sulzer-Weise has developed highly compact and energy-saving pumps and turbines especially for use in seawater desalination plants that markedly reduce the investment and operating costs.
Industry concentration
Due to the high concentration of environmental technology companies, Baden-Württemberg has taken a true top position here in Germany. With one of the world's highest industry concentrations of around 50,000 industrial companies, the state offers a large potential for sale and procurement of products and processes in environmental technology. More than 2,500 companies with total sales revenue of almost 80 billion euros are in the environmental technology business area alone. Hundreds of highly specialized service firms support environmental technology with qualified consulting and engineering services. Their know-how is demanded worldwide.

The intensive occupation by business with environmental technology issues also leads to long-term and successful cooperation with environmental research in Baden-Württemberg. For example, the Stuttgart Region Economic Development Corporation (WRS) has already initiated three innovation and competence centers for environmental technology in which companies and research cooperate successfully with each other.

Labor force potential
Baden-Württemberg offers companies in environmental technology a broad spectrum of qualified workers. Almost 80,000 students in Baden-Württemberg study natural sciences, such as chemistry, Pharmaceuticals or biology or engineering sciences at a university or university of applied sciences. Many of the state's universities offer a technical or biological orientation and so have set up special study programs in the area of environmental engineering:
  • Process and environmental engineering at the FH Heilbronn or FH Offenburg
  • Biotechnology at the FH Mannheim
  • Chemical engineering at the FH Mannheim
  • English programs (BA/MA), such as Air Quality Control, Solid Waste and Waste Water Process Engineering at the University of Stuttgart or Molecular & Cellular Biology at the University of Heidelberg.

Technology parks and founders' centers
Various centers promote and support young, innovative companies in environmental technology through synergies with research institutes.

Umweltzentrum Vaihingen/Enz (Environment Center Vaihingen/Enz)
The goal of the Vaihingen Environmental Center is to attract established companies and start-ups in all areas of process and environmental engineering. The companies profit here from technology and marketing advice, reduced rents, an extensive office infrastructure as well as conferences and symposia. Sponsor of the Environmental Center are the city of Vaihingen and the company Goema.

Life Science Center Esslingen am Neckar
The official life science competence center of the Stuttgart region goes technologically beyond biotechnology and is directed at the future-oriented markets of health, nutrition, agricultural and environment. The business support activity of the city of Esslingen am Neckar assists the companies of the Life Science Center in all business matters. Currently, 9 companies reside in around 1,000 square meters of laboratory and 1,000 square meters of office space. The second construction stage is already in planning.

Network structures
With competence centers, the state, companies and institutions of Baden-Württemberg are creating new potential markets in the area of environmental engineering:

Environmental Engineering Competence Center – KURS
KURS is a network of science, business, municipalities, service-providers, associations and other organizations and actors in the Stuttgart region and in Baden-Württemberg in the areas of environmental engineering, environmental economicas and sustainable economic activity.

The bundled competence can be found in the various institutes of the University of Stuttgart (neighborhood water construction, water quality and waste-disposal business; process engineering and steam boiler technology). The Hochschule für Technik (Stuttgart Univesity of Applied Sciences), the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB and the Vaihingen Environment Center have integrated themselves into the network as important partners in research.

BioRegion Freiburg
Since 1996, BioRegio Freiburg is counted among the most successful bioregions in Germany - with more than 100 companies and 70 research departments in the area of life sciences as well as over 40 newly founded biotech companies. The research emphases are in the areas of red biotechnology, tissue engineering, biochips and green biotechnology.

The region in the so-called BioValley combines the biotechnology activities of south Baden, northwest Switzerland and Alsace. The network is promoted by the BioMed Freiburg foundation, which has also established the BioTechPark Freiburg and BioDigital, the international professional exhibition for biotechnology, bioinformatics and microarrays, in Freiburg. Numerous research institutes and international pharmaceutical companies, such as Novartis, Roche and Aventis, as well as small life science companies, such as BioChip Technologies GmbH, Metrum Bioinformatik AG und GeneScan Europe AG, ensure a compact competence network.

Associations and industry institutions
The environmental project site of the LVI is the contact for Baden-Württemberg companies in the environmental industry. It offers competent support, especially for entering foreign markets and building up international contacts.

For the Environmental Project Site, a CD with the title "Environmental Technology Guide", which depicts the competencies of the Baden-Württemberg environmental technology, can also be requested.
